Oklahoma City-based studio Fitzsimmons Architects has designed the OKasian House project.

“Downtown Oklahoma City is in the midst of a rebirth and it bears little resemblance to the barren dry landscape that was the backdrop of Steinbeck’s great novel. In the setting of a bustling and revitalized Downtown, The OKasian House was the debut effort of a new architecture firm. Nestled in the heart of the city, it reinterprets the idea of home and downtown living, and serves as home, architectural office, and design workshop. The site, once home to 3 buildings demolished in the 80’s satisfied the owners’ enthusiasm for downtown living and the architect’s belief in urban in-fill.
The form is mathematically influenced by numerals important to the owners, and aesthetically expressive of their unique taste. It is enveloped in metal with large expanses of brick, glass and skylights, providing approximately 2400 sf of living space filled with art and furniture by the Owner/Architect as well as other local artists. One objective was to maximize the view of Oklahoma City’s growing skyline. Placing the building at the South end of the lot accomplished that and accommodates discreet alley garage and shop access on the South lower level. This placement also allows a future building to the north. Guest entry to the property utilizes a set of original concrete steps and takes the visitor through the site of a bamboo lined courtyard on the North side of the house. The North wall of all sliding glass panels mesh the interior with the courtyard, and invite one into spaces which flow and change to accommodate the owners’ needs.
A sixteen foot high corner of glass, framing the downtown view, serves as a focus for nearly every point within. Whether one is in the galley kitchen, the balcony office or the two story volume living room, the outdoors is an inviting presence. Three outdoor spaces have been included, all of which allow interaction with the reviving neighborhood while maintaining a level of privacy. Foremost of these spaces is a sheltered roof top deck, perfect for catching one of Oklahoma’s panoramic sunsets or an evening’s view of the downtown skyline’s twinkling lights.”

What is your job title and ethnicity?
I am a Graphic Designer for an architectural office, and I have two years of experience in this particular field. I would describe myself as demanding, awkward, and restless.
I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA, but I am ethnically Filipino. Both of my parents immigrated from the Philippines, so although I have never really experienced discrimination, my childhood was a little bit more difficult than normal. I had to learn English as a third language, but these hardships taught me at an early age that if you put the work in, you will be rewarded with accomplishments.
What does your job entail?
I studied architecture in college, so my work as a graphic designer is focused on the field of architecture. My work has aided in re-branding the firm’s image and voice as presented in texts, graphic prints, and on the web. I also design and create various prints such as pamphlets, brochures, and books used for marketing purposes and award program submissions. In addition, due to my knowledge of computers and programs, I have provided general technical computer support. I think there’s a common misconception that graphic designers are artists. I have found that one’s “artistry” really needs to be held back to please the clients. Maturity in this field shows in the way in which a graphic designer can please his clients while still maintaining a quality of work that he can be proud of.
Are you satisfied with your current position?
I would rate my job satisfaction as a 10 out of 10. I love architecture and graphic design. I literally sit and make pretty pictures all day long and get paid for it. Of course, there are the stresses of deadlines, but I have learned that it is my responsibility to be realistic about the work I am able to do. It is very important to know your limits and to express them to those you work with as well as to those your work for.
I love doing graphic design for an architecture firm. It’s extremely fulfilling and exciting, and I am constantly learning new things. I think that although I am very happy with where I am now, it is just in my nature to be restless and I have many more careers and worlds that I want to see. I am currently exploring writing, and it has its own set of challenges and rewards.
How did you end up in this career field?
I got started in this work while still studying in university. While working on my degree in architecture, I worked as an intern at an international architecture office. Since I was not yet a licensed architect, most of the work given to me was graphic work. From then on, I improved and showed a real talent, so I moved more toward graphic design than floor plan drafting. I am very grateful and happy with the way in which my career developed. I wouldn’t change anything.
What have you learned while on the job?
Honestly, I have learned that there is no secret to success. All you have to do is work hard and dedicate yourself. I believe that this goes for any career path or life goal. Some things in life need an inherent passion and talent, but even with those, success needs hard work.
As I’ve previously mentioned, learning your limitations as a graphic designer is very important. I learned this the hard way. In my office, there are only two graphic designers. We are somewhat understaffed, considering the amount of graphic work we do. When I first started, I was eager to prove myself and my skills, so I accepted every single project pitched to me. This is very dangerous, because if you cannot deliver, the failure not only affects you as a designer, but the company you represent, as well. It is very important to know your limitations so that you do not promise more than you can deliver. Unfortunately, there is no way to learn this unless you push yourself.
What makes you go to work every day?
Client satisfaction is what motivates me to get up for work every day. The designing and creativity is fun, but the truly rewarding aspect of this job is the appreciation that clients will express for jobs done well. You will quickly learn in this field, it is very difficult to truly please clients.
Have you ever experienced stress on the job?
Design isn’t solely about the concepts. School tends to be theory heavy, which is excellent for fostering talent and fueling passion. The workplace, however, is hardly like school. Sometimes, it’s sad to admit, but concepts can take a back seat to the client’s wishes. It’s the designer’s job to not only make the client happy, but to open the client up to good design if the client is closed to it initially. This can prove to be very difficult at times.
The biggest challenges in this field are demanding clients. More specifically, demanding clients with no clue about graphic design. It is extremely frustrating to work with clients who not only undervalue the work you do, but have no real grounds for such a view. Having to deal with these impossible people makes me want to quit, sometimes. I once had a client refuse to pay because they argued that the work we did was not quantifiable. I’m not sure how they came to this conclusion because they were the ones who specifically requested the project. Needless to say, they still paid for the services rendered.
Graphic design can be a very stressful job if you let it get to you. Deadlines are a simple fact of life in this field. Some clients can add stress by requesting near-impossible delivery dates. It is up to you to draw lines when your personal well-being starts to get compromised. Personally, I have developed a healthy balance between work and my personal life. The secret is to love what you do, but never let your job be your life.
What are your salary and benefits?
I get paid a little under $50,000 per year (net). It is a good amount for the city I live in, considering the cost of living. With my salary, I am able to live a very good lifestyle.
The company I work for normally does a cumulative hours build-up system that is directly proportionate to the amount of hours I work. Depending on how many total hours I work, I can take anywhere from two to four weeks of vacation a year. It isn’t nearly enough for my insatiable wanderlust, but it’s pretty standard for the field.
What advice could you give someone wanting to enter the field on graphic design?
Graphic design tends to be a very competitive world. Level of education can sometimes be overlooked for a stellar portfolio. It all depends on the company and the type of talent it is looking to hire. However, it is always a good idea to study graphic design at the university level to gain the basic skills that all companies are searching for.
To anyone considering becoming a graphic designer, I would ask them if they really love design. This field is something that needs not only talent and hard work, but an absolute love for the projects. The hours are long and the quality asked of you is extremely high. If there is no love for what you do, you will burn out incredibly fast.
Where would you like to be in five years?
In five years, I hope to have a collection of short stories published. Not only will I have written the content, but I will also design the cover and all promotional materials.

Summary
The technical requirements for future building processes are growing increasingly complex and necessitate custom solutions. Computer-controlled methods enable the production of individually designed components without increasing costs and time. Unlike stationary devices, mobile units can be used directly at building sites and unite the performance of digitally described elements and in situ construction.
Comprehensive robot-assisted construction processes require simple and intuitive operation. The focus of this research project therefore lies in the algorithmic description of automated construction processes and the communication between man and machine, because complex scan and object recognition processes in an undefined workspace can be simplified by human instructions.
The research goals of this thesis are therefore the robot-based manufacture of architectural components on a scale of 1:1 and the direct application of industrial robots at the construction site. Mobile robot systems are designed to perceive their environment (construction site) and respond and adapt to changing conditions. The synergy between the research fields of architecture and experimental computer science is of central importance for this new issue.
Personal background
After studying architecture at the University of Siegen (D), Volker Helm specialized in Computer Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) as part of a Master of Advanced Studies with chair Ludger Hovestadt (ETH Zurich). This and automated production were his main areas of study. As part of his thesis he designed an Internet-controlled formwork machine able to replicate configured free forms.
During his subsequent six-year employment at the Basel architecture office Herzog & de Meuron he focused on the development, programming, and implementation of complex geometries and worked on many internationally renowned projects, such as the National Stadium in Beijing. He conducted in-house seminars and evaluated computer-controlled production machines.
Since 2010, Volker Helm has been a research assistant to the professors Gramazio and Kohler, the chairs of Architecture and Digital Fabrication at ETH Zurich. His research deals with the algorithmic description of architectural components and their robot-based production. He gives lectures and conducts workshops at various universities and technical colleges.

 I’m Mindy Tangney, Architectural Coordinator for Acoustics By Design. Clients often ask me “What does ‘architectural coordinator’ mean? Are you coordinating Architects? Are you doing architecture for ABD?” Well, not exactly. Let me explain.
In the world of architecture, there are titled positions including: Principal in Charge, Project Manager, Designer, and what used to be called “Drafter”. Now, these position titles may vary from firm to firm, but they fall in these same categories. The Principal in Charge is the person that meets with potential clients; once a project is awarded the Project Manager and Designer will be introduced to the client to work on the project and come up with a design; once a design has been determined the project is sent to the “Drafter” aka Architectural Coordinator or Production Staff, so that documents can be created for construction of the project.
The Architectural Coordinator uses AutoCAD to produce the construction documents and is also in constant communication with the rest of the team involved on that project. The team can consist of Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Structural Engineers, Landscape Designers, and any specialty areas (including Audio-Visual Designers and Acoustical Engineers). It is the Architectural Coordinator’s responsibility to communicate with the team to ensure they have all of the documents and information they may need to complete the project. We also help keep the team on schedule – it’s all about communication.
So you may be asking yourself, “What is an Architectural Coordinators’ role in an Acoustical Engineering & Audio-Visual Design Firm?” Well, my day to day tasks are somewhat similar to what they would be in an architecture firm. I work on all of the AutoCAD documents and coordinate with the team of architects and engineers. The big difference is that our project involvement is on a smaller scale than in an architect’s office. Instead of working on one project for months, I am usually working on 3-5 different projects every day. Another program I use is called EASE, a 3D sound modeling program that assists the Audio-Visual Designers and Acoustical Engineers in the selection of the appropriate audio equipment and acoustical materials.
At Acoustics By Design, we work on projects from small churches to large IMAX theatres and everything in between. Our consultants do the design work and focus on the big picture, and I focus on the details making sure everything is accounted for and nothing slips through the cracks. With my architectural background, I have been able to bring a “fresh set of eyes” to the way our office creates documents and communicates back to the architect and client.

 Today we take you to an unusual place and design spot. In many countries, mausoleums and tombs remain the common final resting places. These objects are rarely on the radar of those seeking creative architecture and design.
Pantheon Nube by Claviel Arquitectos sets a great example that the love of design excellence lives forever and is immortal. The 39-square tomb is located in Murcia, Spain and joins over 10,000 other mausoleums in the region yet gains attention through its unique design: the manipulation of volume and light and its bold, imaginative execution.
Demonstrating the potent to do interesting work in provincial locations, Manuel Clavel describes Pantheon Nube as an architectural exercise: ‘Small projects are like going to the gym to prepare your mind and body for other projects.” In the past years Clavel Arquitectos has already built two other pantheons – the first one was built for Manuel Clavel’s grandfather during the times when Manuel was still an architecture student.
The knowledge the office gained from the previous projects along with an enthusiastic client, made the realization of such unusual project possible. According to the architect there is a little difference between this project and another. Marble, onyx and plaster have been used in the interior to craft the spaces that are required for the ritual of entombment. The entrance to the mausoleum is quite tricky and can only be gained once the 5 steel doors are opened in a correct order known only to the owner and architecture office.
We all know that tombs and mausoleums are built as objects of remembrance or for people who think a lot about their own death. However, these objects often lack creativity and take a pattern-book approach. They normally say very little about the persons resting within. Pantheon Nube might seem bizarre at the first but it belongs to the small yet important projects that rely on architectural patronage. The mausoleum shows us another view on death and talks about the immortal love of architecture.
